Background of the Study
Fatigue is a major occupational health concern that affects employee performance, safety, and well-being. Fatigue-related accidents occur when workers experience excessive tiredness, leading to reduced concentration, slow reaction times, and impaired decision-making abilities (Okafor & Yusuf, 2024). In physically demanding industries such as manufacturing, construction, and transportation, fatigue significantly increases the risk of workplace accidents.
In Kaduna State, long working hours, shift work, and high job demands contribute to fatigue among employees. Studies have shown that fatigue-related accidents are common in sectors where workers are required to operate heavy machinery, work night shifts, or perform repetitive tasks for extended periods (Adebayo, 2023). The relationship between fatigue and workplace accidents needs to be examined to inform policies aimed at reducing work-related injuries.
Statement of the Problem
Workplace accidents remain a significant challenge in Kaduna State, with many cases attributed to human error. Fatigue is a critical factor that reduces employee alertness, but its role in workplace accidents is often overlooked (Olawale & Musa, 2023). Many workers in Kaduna State are exposed to long hours of strenuous labor with minimal rest, which may increase their likelihood of experiencing work-related injuries.
Despite existing labor laws, enforcement of work-hour regulations is weak in many industries, leading to high rates of exhaustion among workers. This study seeks to evaluate the effect of fatigue on workplace accidents, focusing on industries where long hours and physically demanding work are prevalent.
Objectives of the Study
1. To determine the relationship between fatigue and workplace accidents in Kaduna State.
2. To assess the prevalence of fatigue among workers in various industries.
3. To recommend strategies for mitigating fatigue-related workplace accidents.
Research Questions
1. How does fatigue contribute to workplace accidents in Kaduna State?
2. What is the prevalence of fatigue among workers in different industries?
3. What measures can be implemented to reduce fatigue-related workplace accidents?
Research Hypotheses
1. Workers who experience high levels of fatigue are more prone to workplace accidents.
2. Shift workers and employees with long working hours report higher levels of fatigue than those with regular schedules.
3. Implementing adequate rest breaks and workload management strategies can reduce fatigue-related accidents.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on high-risk industries in Kaduna State, including transportation, construction, and manufacturing. It will assess fatigue levels among workers and analyze accident records related to exhaustion. Limitations may include self-reported fatigue data, which could be influenced by individual perceptions.
Definitions of Terms
• Fatigue: A state of extreme tiredness resulting from prolonged mental or physical exertion.
• Workplace Accidents: Unplanned incidents in the work environment that lead to injury or harm.
• Shift Work: A work schedule that involves irregular or overnight shifts, often contributing to fatigue.
